The Relatively Recent State Of Artificial Intelligence - March 2023

The March 2023 installment of our Relatively Recent State of Artificial Intelligence as it’s been a hectic four weeks since the last post in early February on the latest developments in and around artificial intelligence. No surprise that releases, announcements and general hype are in maximum overdrive. Here’s a rundown of things that have gotten my attention recently and know that we do this work so you do not have to:

  • OpenAI released the ChatGPT subscription, ChatGPT Plus for $20/month, and it was a mad rush of folks to get that subscription as quickly as possible. OpenAI had to monetize quickly as the insane volume of use of ChatGPT was costing them millions in bandwidth and server capacity.
  • Radical Ventures, who raised a $550M AI focused investment fund announced back in January, published an excellent piece on generative AI titled “What’s The Big Deal With Generative AI?” the first in a series of articles exploring “…the importance of Generative AI models, how to approach them, how to map their AI technology and value stack, and how to better harness their power to create new intelligent systems.” It is well worth the time to read and follow this series. The entire Radical Ventures website is packed with great content and perspective, highly recommend.
  • We follow Ben’s Bites pretty closely as he (and his team, obviously…) charts the release of AI tools. We’ve commented recently that the volume of releases is insane and that it is essentially impossible to keep up. Ben shared a couple weeks ago that the week prior had over 90 AI tools announced, and in the last two weeks there were over 200 AI tools announced/released. This makes the roll out of martech platforms over the last decade look like a snail’s pace in comparison.
  • To that previous bullet, one way that we create focus to ensure we are evaluating the AI tools that are higher value for our team, to filter out the noise, is to look for those that can be part of AI Workflows, Not One-Offs.
  • This is interesting. OpenAI published a post about their concerns/fears regarding artificial general intelligence, essentially exactly what they have and are creating. The post details how OpenAI is ensuring that as they get closer to AGI they have in place the guardrails and controls to ensure that AGI is not misused for destructive or nefarious purposes. Thank you for that.
  • And within a week of the above bullet OpenAI announced the release of ChatGPT and Whisper APIs which gives developers “… access to cutting-edge language and speech-to-text capabilities. Through a series of system-wide optimizations, we’ve achieved 90% cost reduction for ChatGPT since December; we’re now passing through those savings to API users.” This will lead/is already leading to a tsunami of AI infused apps and other innovations. Serious land grab.
  • Our partner Chas. Porter recently did an interesting interview with ChatGPT on the future of search. In the interview he pins ChatGPT down on incorrect information and… ChatGPT apologized. Check it out.

I have always been an early adopter. Ideas, concepts, technologies and methodologies, learning and testing these is a personal passion. This puts me in the unique position of usually having perspective, POV and experience with this newness before everyone else. I use this to both my and my consulting clients advantage. Let me show you.
